Desi Holiday - The Story, Script & Scenes

I love stories about everyday relationships that are filled with everyday people.  I also love fantasy and when a teenager is in love for the first time and pregnant – this is the perfect scenario for the two worlds to collide.  I wanted Desi to remain silent and simply observe as people figured out how to communicate with her through her apparent silence as her inner voice was beyond vocal.  The script was simply a blueprint and through rehearsals and being able to hear the characters come alive; the dialogue was further shaped.

Antagonist - Ex. Boyfriend

This scene taught me a lot about writing conflict and the so-called antagonist. It wasn't so much about what was written in the script it was more about what wasn't said. The subtle looks and the awkward silences said so much in this scene. I realized that each character traded off being both the antagonist and protagonist. The expressions and the pacing that the Teela Caldwell and Cleveland Berto (Desi & Zane) delivered spoke loud and clear 4real! When I I edited this scene the shot choices and that pacing further amplified the moment.

Comic Relief - Brother

In Desi's world there's been a lot of self-reflective moments, but life isn't all about the serious side of things and writing the scenes with her brother Damien played by Phillip Neal made me laugh and rehearsing his scenes had us dyyying! We had a lot o fun and the rhythm of the script when Desi thinks and Damien simultaneously responds was key. Humor is all about timing.

Resolution - Mama

In western culture we've become use to stories being wrapped up in a pretty bow; on some Cinderella stuff. I purposely didn't want the film to end like that, but I did want there to be a some sort of realization. Dana's character, played by Danette Wilson was inspired by my grandma and Big Mama. Although there's a bible in the scene, I didn't want it to feel preachy so I wrote a lot of opposites into the scene. This scene is the second to the last so it sets up the final scene.
