Each 1 Teach 1 & Empower

The Echo Park Film Center (EPFC) is a Co-op of art activists, filmmakers and educators; which I’m proud to be a part of.  EPFC has provided filmmaking resources to underserved and underrepresented communities for many years. Regardless of your filmmaking level of expertise; there’s something cool to experience at EPFC.  You will also find a microcinema, equipment rentals & more!  Please visit www.echoparkfilmcenter.org for more info.  Here’s a beautiful result of a 16 mm workshop day.

Celebrating our Elders

During these Covid times our Elders have been particularly vulnerable.  EPFC received a grant from AARP to help spread some sunshine to our beautiful seniors. This workshop celebrates these gems by helping them share their lovely stories. An EPFC workshop is often more about the process than the end result.  We just want you to try a new way of self-expression and pick up a couple of cool tools while on the journey! The AARP workshop was also a way to preserve the histories that are precious to our families, communities and society.  Here are a couple of stories from this workshop.  I was honored to be a part of this project.  To see more of these EPFC / AARP short films, please visit www.echparkfilmcenter.org and search AARP.

Truth Collective LA

The spiritual journey spans a lifetime.  The Truth Collective is a storytelling platform for such community stories.  This workshop was an exploration of the various spiritual beliefs and practices in our urban communities. It gave these believers a platform to make their first films and utilize the filmmaking medium to inform and enlighten. Thank you to EPFC for helping to provide the resources for this budding movement and to Lisa Marr for helping to facilitate this workshop!  Here are a couple of the films that were birthed from this profound experience.

The Sound We See

is an EPFC collaborative film that explores the historic Echo Park area of Los Angeles in 24 hours.  Each hour in a day is represented by 1 filmmaker taking ownership of 1 minute of film. The end result is a 24 minute collaborative 16 mm cinematic experience.  The film premiered at the annual outdoor Lotus Festival in Echo Park and was accompanied by an amazing live band!

The Mary Magdalene Project

The Mary Magadalene Project is a non-profit organization that provides programs and resources to victims of prostitution.  I enjoyed working with the women and we developed a cool sisterhood connection during that time. MMP’s five programs reflect an overall commitment to long-term permanent change and support for women and their families.  Here is one of the Self Portrait films that was birthed out of this EPFC filmmobile project.

EPFC Youth Workshops

I am | She is | We are Awesome

A very special all girls workshop to help inspire, uplift and empower our future female thinkers and doers.  Special thank you to Lisa Marr and The Boys and Girls Club for making this another memorable EPFC experience.

Ben Caldwell in Leimert Park @ KAOS

EPFC partnered with KAOS network, a community arts center dedicated to provided training in digital and multimedia arts, for a one day filmmaking workshop.  KAOS is located in the heart of Leimert and was established by Filmmaker, Ben Caldwell over 20 years ago.  The day was beautiful and 13 kids all under the age of 13 shot, edited and screened their works of art, all within a 6 hour period.

Sojourner Truth Continuation School

The Filmmobile allows EPFC to travel all over and bring filmmaking resources to you!  Yep the Filmmobile if equipped with gear and all, so if you can’t makeit to EPFC no worries, you can still get a taste of making your own movie! This was a cool youth project because there were precious moments that some students felt very comfortable sharing their thoughts.  This sweet film was one of those moments.
